Almost all of us are faced with a time management problem of one kind or another and if you have recognised yours, you have started off well. It’s so important to be skilful in this arena and this will involve you recognising, identifying and solving individual time management problems. You have to be able to take control of your life – and make no mistake about it, through ineffectual use of your time you cannot possibly hope to achieve your coveted goals.

Time management skills can be learned. They are not inherent within us and we are not born with the ability to use time wisely, unfortunately. While it is certainly true that time management skills and techniques all revolve around common sense, many different techniques are available in different situations and you have to make appropriate choices if your overall goal is to be highly effective.

One of the more important time management techniques that you’ll ever master is decision-making. Every one of the most successful people around us is an effective decision-maker. They’re all able to take into account every important element, to gather the information necessary, to judge alternatives and to come up with a firm, qualified decision. For those of us who fail to make decisions adequately, we often incorrectly assess a situation or are poor at information gathering, which forces us to miss the point. Clearly define the issue, and if you have more than one issue rolled up into one problem, delineate and then make individual decisions accordingly.

The logistician is charged with the responsibility of applying sometimes complex decisions and processes to achieve a goal or a set of goals. Assume the role of the logistician, as you look at each situation from all angles. More often than not each question requires a black or white, yes or no answer, or in technical terms, a zero or a one. Don’t think for a minute that this requires you to think like a computer processor, but you must be able to narrow down your choices with the ultimate goal of making your decision making process a lot easier.

Evaluate all the consequences, take doubt out of the equation and make a firm decision before you are ready to take action steps. Once you master the process of decision-making, you will be on the road to successfully managing your time and becoming highly productive.

Over the course of time, the art and science of decision making will become a valuable asset to you and you will become quite adept and intuitive. Put a lot of effort into your time management skill acquisition, using time tracking software and online time management, and this will allow you to become more accomplished by adding even more to your ability as an effective time manager in the future. These days, time management software is the natural choice if you are adamant about improving your productivity. No longer do you have to worry about spreadsheets, charts, stopwatches or other distractions, as the software is purpose-made to help you enjoy the value of time.
