Hosting has evolved and is now much better. I was very very broke when I got into this business over 10 years ago. I paid my hosting fees on a monthly basis, as some still do today, but I dreaded the end of the month when the next payment was due. I always had to rethink whether I should even be in this business, because I often didn’t earn enough, or couldn’t scrape together enough to pay my hosting fees.

It’s not hosting cost a ridiculous amount of money. It was about $15 a month. But I still had troubles paying it. Since I was late, my site would be down until I was able to finally pay the bill.

Even worse than that, expanding my business was a joke. If I wanted to branch off into new web sites I wouldn’t be able to afford a separate hosting package naturally I had to put my sites into subfolders and redirect the domains. That practice, I found out the hard way, was against the rules of most web hosting providers that I dealt with. I was running out of hosting companies, so I thought, but mind you I was only dealing with local companies. It never even occurred to me to venture outside the country (or even city) to lay down new virtual land. Sounds strange now that I type this.

Plus I had to submit trouble tickets anything I wanted to do anything to my sites. You know, adding support for dynamic programming languages, changing or adding to the root document, changing permissions, all took days to accomplish.

Thankfully, these days, things are much more advanced. People are buying hosting packages from companies on the other side of the world. We are being billed 1, 2, 3 or more years in advance. People are also hosting all of their websites under just one account and their costs aren’t increasing at all.

I deal with multiple companies now for my hosting needs. GoDaddy is one of the companies whom I host with. I pay even less for an unlimited hosting package than I did for the one-site hosting package back in the day. I have almost as much control as I want with this hosting package, but this came with a bit of a learning curve for me but now I have the process down to a science. One of the most common of the tasks on GoDaddy is to add extra web sites to your unlimited hosting package. I wrote an article which explains this task in plain English. It’s very simple to follow along. Read it here: Multiple Sites Godaddy
